However, cultivation in some parts of Polynesia actually predates European exploration by about 500 years, so the possibility exists that early Polynesians traveled as far west as Central America and transplanted the sweet potato then.

The sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) is botanically distinct from both the African/Asian yam (genus Dioscorea) and the "New Zealand yam" (Oxalis tuberosa). The continents were all connected at one time.v
