Actually, I believe, they don't so much "lose" their tail as they have their tale recede. As a tadpole grows it grows it's legs, then the tail gets shorter and shorter till it is nonexistent.
As a tadpole develops into a frog or toad (depending on the type of tadpole), the tail is absorbed slowly by the body.
