How do taxonomies and tools for tagging facilitate knowledge management? |
[Edit] |
Answer
Knowledge management depends upon the identification and arrangement of information for later retrieval. A taxonomy permits a system to partition knowledge according to various criteria and tagging permits the criteria to become associated with the bits of knowledge. Therefore, once you know how to sort things out (taxonomy) and store them (tag) it will facilitate further arrangements and retrieval of the pertinent knowledge.
For example, lists of animals, sorted by normal mature size, tagged with whether they are native species in some list of locations or habitats types. Query: What is the largest animal in the sea? Answer: Find animals with tag of sea habitat, take highest on the list of size.
