There is probably not a figure for this, since "popularity" could be interpreted in different ways. One method might be to calculate sales figures for different team merchandise. Another might be total up ticket sales. Yet another would be radio or TV audience estimates. None of these would be perfect.
Almost inevitably, popularity will track the size of the market (e.g. New York is larger than Charlotte, North Carolina) and historical success rates.

True. A lot of things come into it. However www.qlobal.com looks at how popular the teams are in the media. And the results are by no means set in stone. They change from day to day which is why it is best to check qlobals monthly stats. Also geography comes into it eg Houston Rockets is very popular in China due to Yao Ming playing for them.
In the USA the most popular in March 08 were Celtics, Spurs, Heat , Nuggets and Suns because they made the biggest headlines of the month. Lakers is a sleeping giant and as soon as they got to the top of the Western Conference they went straight to number 1 in the rankings.
