The only direct conncetion is in the pharynx, where its subdivsions the oropharynx and laryngopharynx meet (the back of your mouth near where the uvula is). There the esophagus (digestive system) and the trachea (respiratory system) start their respective tracts. They are separated by the epiglottis which remains open to allow air passage and closes only during swallowing so you don't "breathe" liquid or food. When it closes the epiglottis seals the trachea leaving the esophagus the only tract open.
