The list is maintained by a committee of the World Meteorological Organization. Various world regions have a list assigned to them from which they take the next name. Lists are recycled, except for names which have been associated with damage and death. The Web Link on the left show the lists of names available.

Hurricanes names are chosen from a list selected by the World Meteorological Organization. The Atlantic is assigned six lists of names, with one list used each year. Every sixth year, the first list begins again. Each name on the list starts with a different letter, for example, the name of the very first hurricane of the season starts with the letter A, the next starts with the letter B, and so on. The letters "Q", "U", "X", "Y" and "Z", however, are not used.

Often when an unusually destructive hurricane hits, that hurricane's name is retired and never used again. Since 1954, forty names have been retired. In 1996 Hurricane Luis was retired. Is your name among the currently used or retired hurricane names?

Hurricanes are given names to allow the public to easily distinguish between systems when there are multiple systems in an individual basin at the same time. These names are taken from lists which vary from region to region and are drafted a few years ahead of time. The lists are decided upon, depending on the regions, either by committees of the World Meteorological Organization (called primarily to discuss many other issues), or by national weather offices involved in the forecasting of the storms. Each year, the names of particularly destructive storms (if there are any) are "retired" and new names are chosen to take their place.

The naming of hurricanes first began as being named for the saints of the particular day they occurred. Clement Wragge, Director of the Queensland state meteorological department in the 19th century, has been credited as the first to name storms after actual people. At first this idea didn't catch on but in the 1940s it was restarted by the American Weather Bureau who realized that nicknaming the hurricanes made them easier to identify.

For several hundred years many hurricanes in the West Indies were named after the particular saint's day on which the hurricane occurred. For example, there was Hurricane Santa Ana which struck Puerto Rico with exceptional violence on July 26, 1825, and San Felipe (the first) and San Felipe (the second) which hit Puerto Rico on September 13 in both 1876 and 1928.

Clement Wragge, Director of the Queensland state meteorological department at the end of the 19th century, is credited with being the first person to systematically name storms after real people. The idea never really caught on. But it was revived in the 1940s by the American Weather Bureau when short-wave radio came into general use for the transmission of weather forecasts and warnings to shipping and aviation. Giving hurricanes nicknames was a very simple and quick way of identifying a particular storm from one day to the next. In 1953 the National Weather Service began using female names for storms.

The National Hurricane Center. Names are predetermined on a list that is reused every six years. Names of particularly bad storms are retired from use and a panel in the NHC votes on replacement names.

Why do hurricanes get named but tornadoes do not?

Hurricanes and tropical storms can be named on a relatively simple naming system because there are rarely more than a dozen in a single season. There has only been one time that the National Hurricane Center ran out of names (2005 season), in which case the used Greek letters to names the excess storms. There were 27 storms in that season. Additionally, hurricanes are large storms that form over the course of hours and days, so they can be tracked and named while they are active. By comparison the U.S. averages more than 1,000 tornadoes each year; it would be impossible to have a naming system for so many storms. Additionally tornadoes are very small and short lived compared with hurricanes; a tornado sometimes only lasts a few seconds and the occurrence of a tornado is often not confirmed until after it has passed through. Same with waterspouts and dust devils.

Where did hurricane Galveston hit?

"Hurricane Galveston" was not the name of a hurricane. There was the Galveston hurricane of 1900, which occurred before there was a naming system for hurricanes. As a result the hurricane was named for where it hit: Galveston, Texas.

What year did meteorologists stop naming hurricanes after women?

Until 1979, the lists were made up only of women's names, but because of claims that the naming convention was sexist, the lists of names for hurricanes and tropical storms after 1979 have alternated between men's names and women's names. So, they never stopped naming them after women... they just added men too in 1979.

When they first started naming hurricanes they only named them girl names because of the saying there is not wrath like that of a woman scorned... Each year they come up with a list of names A-Z and just give off the names as new hurricanes come about (i don't know how they come up with the names or why they started naming them in the first place)
