How do trees maintain the balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide percentage in environment?

Trees carry out process of respiration in which CO2 is utilized. That is, they absorb carbon dioxide from the air and store the carbon in their roots, trunks, branches and leaves. Fifty percent of a tree by weight is carbon. Thus, if the number of trees is increased, more CO2 will be consumed and the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere will reduce.

Carbon is an essential element to all life (whether plant or animal), while oxygen is an essential element to all animal life. Plants draw carbon from carbon dioxide molecules that they need to grow; herbivores then get the carbon and nutrients they need by eating the plants, and of course predators get their from the herbivores who get it from plants.

The actual mechanism of how plants is still not solidly understood, but it is generally believed that plants use the energy from sunlight to separate the carbon atom out of carbon dioxide molecules. The oxygen (mostly O2, which all animal life -- including human beings -- need), to the plant, is a "waste" gas and can be thought of as the plants' exhale in an inverse of how we (as members of the animal kingdom) create carbon dioxide (our lungs take oxygen out of our breathe-in, saturate it into our blood to be pumped around our bodies, and by its return, the oxygen has picked up carbon atoms and has become carbon dioxide, which go from our blood stream back into our lungs which we then breathe out).

Trees are part of the carbon cycle, as is much of nature. Rotting trees release carbon dioxide, growing trees take it back out of he atmosphere, and in return, they give us oxygen in the photosynthetic cycle.

If too many forests are destroyed, then this balance is disturbed, and levels of carbon dioxide increase.
