Basically you have a fuel flow meter which measures amount of fuel and you have an odometer input to your ECM. Both of these inputs are used to calulate the average mpg. The ECM knows the fuel tank capacity, which gives the "Miles to Empty" calulation. I really enjoy the trip computer in my 2000 Mercury Cougar.
