Vegeta was chasing Krillin (who was unaware of Vegeta's nearby presence altogether) because Krillin had a Dragon Ball. Having found their hiding spot, Vegeta sets up a bargain, the dragonball or Krillin and Bulma's lives. They all knew that either way, he'd end up taking the dragon ball.
