It depends on the whale. Blue whales for instance suck in a bunch of sea water that has crill (little shrimp like creatures) in it, then forces the water out with its toung while the crill get caught in something called "baleen" which is like a huge filter (imagine pouring water through an air filter...its something like that. Other whales like orca's (killer whales) have teeth and east seals the same way a person eats food..although there is little chewing, its more like ripping the seal into peivec it can swallow.

a whale eats krill by blowing a bubble net and catching it whales eat krill by sucking in water and filtering it through their baleen, when the water goes through the baleen, the krill get filtered out, then the whale swallows the krill and gets rid of the water
