Worms feed on organic matter in the soil. How deep they go depends on soil conditions such as: how deep they can find a reasonable amount of food, how deep is the water table (no snorkels on worms), how far down can they go without running into hard packed clay or bed rock. As long as they have the basic conditions of life they can survive.
Worms are a strange organism in the fact that they are able to live underground. to do this they have many boderly features. One of these features is having small eyes. as the worms live underground they do not need good eye sight therefore overtime, through natural selection, have lost the need for large eyes. Another feature is their tails. their tails work as radar systems, sorcing where preditors are. Works have a strange ability to recognise what organism it upto 3 meters away.
They dig as deep as they can go. They also follow a migration cycle. I found a worm in my backyard when I was 6, and when I was 26 I went to Japan and found him again! I couldn't believe it. Worms can make it anywhere, the strong ones at least.
Earthworms, pinworms, hookworms and tapeworms.
