  1. Blot off any of the dye stain that is still wet. Use a clean paper towel, and do not rub.
  2. Pretreat the stain with a pretreatment that you have bought, following the directions on the pretreatment.
  3. Rinse the garment. If the stain is gone or the garment cannot be bleached, wash it normally.
  4. If the stain is still there and the garment is white or color-safe, soak the entire garment in bleach. Rinse it thoroughly and wash normally once the stain is gone. If the stain is still there after 15 minutes, you probably cannot get rid of it.

This depends on the brown stain's source.

  • If the stain came from any bodily fluid, it is a protein stain and should be rinsed thoroughly in cold water.
  • If the stain was caused by ink or grass, it is a dye stain and should be pretreated and washed in hot water.
  • If the stain was caused by make-up, it is a combination stain and should be rubbed with liquid detergent before it is washed in hot water.

Generally, the lower the temperature of the wash, the less chance there is of the colours running. However, it is often difficult to stop them running entirely, so it is important to wash similar colours together and not put things like a black shirt and white socks in the same wash. You can get these fabric sheet things that you put in the machine with your washing as it washes that absorb the dye as it runs in the water

Since you have to remove different types of stains in different ways, there is no one right answer. Proteins, like blood or glue, should be soaked in cold water. Dyes, like ink and mustard, should be pretreated and rinsed with hot water. Something with an oily or waxy feel should be pretreated with a liquid detergent.
