Every 5,000 miles an oil change indicator light that reads, "MAINT REQD" is automatically switched on in many new vehicles manufactured by Toyota and other auto makers. This light is not an emergency, but rather serves only as a reminder that it has been 5,000 miles since your last oil change. The MAINT REQD light is basically an oil change reminder.
Of course, if you get your oil changed at the dealership, they will turn off the MAINT REQD light for you, but if you change your own oil, or go to a quick lube shop, you may be stuck with this oil indicator lit. Here is a very simple four step process that should turn off the MAINT REQD light for a majority of Toyota vehicles, and possibly other brands as well (before performing this procedure, please check with your owner's manual to make sure that the MAINT REQD light is described as an oil change indicator light):
• Turn your ignition key to the 'ACC' or 'LOCK' position.
• Press and hold the trip meter reset nob (next to your odometer).
• While holding the trip meter reset nob, turn the ignition to 'ON', but do not start the car.
• Hold the meter reset until the MAINT REQD light switches off
