How do you adjust the idle on a 1996 Monte Carlo 3.4 Litre DOHC when you start it goes to 1700 rpms and eventually drops to about 1100 rpms never less than 1000?
It is normal for the idle to be this high on a cold engine immediately after it is started. It should drop back to 1,000 or less in a few seconds. If not the fast idle solenoid could be bad.
check your ecu under the dash ( behind stereo and cubby hole .. shifter cover comes off ) there might be an idle adjuster in the computer if not take it to a mechanic
A typical 6 cylinder engine will idle at around 900 rpm, but they vary. My Isuzu has a 4 cylinder and idles at 750 normally ( more with the AC on). Before I knew what the idle speed was I sped it up...
