It is given either in an intramuscular shot (IM ~ in the muscle) or there is also an intranasal spray vaccine that is sprayed as a mist into the nose. New in the 2011-2012 flu season is a new type of flu vaccine that is administered as an intradermal (ID) injection using a special microinjection system that uses a 90% smaller needle and needs less vaccine than other administrative methods for the same results.

Unless you are a health care provider, you don't administer flu vaccinations yourself. The job of administering it falls on trained health care providers.

In the 2011-2012 flu season in the US, the Swine Flu vaccine is included in the regular "seasonal" flu vaccination.

The injectable preparations approved for use in the US are given intramuscularly (IM-into the muscle) using a needle 1 to 1 1/2 inches long. These are usually given in the muscle of the upper arm, or, in young children, in the outer thigh muscle. This type can be given to adults, children and infants down to as young as 6 months old (if the pediatrician approves) but babies less than 6 months old can not be vaccinated in any way. Their immune systems are not yet developed well enough to have a proper immune response. If breastfed, even for a short period of time, they have gained some immunity through the mother's milk to sustain them until their immune systems develop fully.

There is also a flu vaccine preparation approved for administration in a mist sprayed into the nose. This one is to be used only by healthy people aged 2 - 49.

Are you immune to Influenza after you have had it?

You are not immune to Influenza. Even getting the yearly flu vaccine is no guarantee that a person won't get the flu. You can get the flu but it won't be as bad as it could be if you hadn't received the flu vaccine.
