Short-term is talking about what you plan to do within the next few years. Are you planning to get a promotion, or are you happy with where you are? Do you plan to move to a different company within the next few years?

Long-term is talking about what you plan to do in at least 10 years from now. Do you think you will try to be within a different company? Are you planning to move up in the company you are at now? Will you still be doing the same things you are doing now?

Be truthful but positive, if your goal is to keep the job and be stable say: To be a good employee with a stable long term employment.

If you wish to be promoted: To excel and gain promotion through hard work.

Change and paraphrase to suit your situation.
A long term goal in one's career would be, getting a raise, retirement, vacation. Short term goals could be, getting one's pay check or a date with some one else in the work area.

Uh, you tell them what your short term goals are! This isn't something that someone can answer FOR you. Where do you see yourself in a few months? What kind of accomplishments would really make you feel proud of yourself? Do you hope to learn something new? Do you plan on starting a class or school? Do you hope to spend more time with your family, volunteer more or read that book you've always wanted to? Tell them! ~ T ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ~ T is correct...no one can tell you exactly how to answer this question, since your response will come from what is important to you. However, the more focused and employer-centered you can be about your goal, the better your chances will be of steering the interview in the right direction. Additionally, there are some things you should stay away from...i.e. demonstrating a lack of flexibility by being too specific, being too vauge and not demonstrating vision or planning or by showing that your goals do not fit into the goals of the company. example answer: "My immediate goal for this interview is to impress you and convince you that I am the best candidate for this position, so that I may bring my passion for support services and costumer satisfaction to your company." (This is more of a direct/personal approach that I have found works on an interviewer who is conducting a more laid back interview) "As for the distant future, I have learned that my long-term goals are best achieved when I separate them into shorter goals. My short-term goal is to gain a position with a progressive company, such as your company, with a solid performance and future projections. As part of a team, I want to add value and continue to grow with that company. Once I have established myself, I would like to further my professional and personal education during my free time in a Professional MBA program. My long-term goal will depend on where the company goes. My plan is to move into a position of responsibility where I can build and lead a team." (It may be risky to mention furthering your education since this may indicate that you may not intend to stick around for the long run.) Good luck with your job search! pmeanie

The main thing is to just be honest. Think about what you really want to do with your future and where you want to be. Surely there is something you'd rather be doing if time and money were no object. If you truly cannot think of anything, then just be honest that you are still trying to decide those.

You short-term career goals should be where you see yourself within the next few years - where and how you want to advance in your current (or first) position, whether or not you're seeking a change in your career path and what steps you're currently taking in order to go about realising these changes.

Your long-term career goals are the dreams that you want to fulfil within your lifetime. When you reach the peak of your career, what do you want to be doing? Why is this your goal in life (or at the least, your working life?) How will you go about achieving this goal, and how do your short-term career goals help to set you on the path to achieving this?

Hopefully you have looked at the job requirements before hand. Then, you can think up some goals that would include learning and using the skills needed. If you want to develop skills in teamwork, for instance, you would state what you are good at now and what parts you think this job will enhance.

This is not a trap question, but is designed to see if you can think on your feet.

Short term is easy. You can often add the word "senior" to whatever job you are applying for. Thus, you can say "my short term goal is to become a senior engineer / senior IT person / senior sales person / senior writer etc". In other words take it to the next level.

Long term takes a bit more polish. You can say "long term I want to progress thru the organization / company /department ... by contributing to profits / increasing sales / expanding the business / signing new customers / creating new software solutions ... as a key member of this company".

These kinds of responses usually force the interviewer into a brief, mental pause: do I see this person in that way or not?

If you watch the interviewer after your 'long term' answer, you will be able to gauge how the interview is going !!
