I suggest not asking them out on a date (such as going to the movies). What you should do is just be confident and tell them how you feel. The other person will LOVE this, but not if they are around their friends, so be sure to tell them alone. Then, just ask them if they want to go out with you. I made the same mistake and I always tried to over-complicate the question. If you just say what you mean, and don't stumble over yourself, you'll do fine.
You will know when it is the time to go on a real date, and the question will just feel natural.
