Your mom above all understands the importance of good health! There are many reasons to start seeing a GYN doctor, irregular or painful periods, the desire to start Birth Control, just wanting to know everything is working the way it should or getting the injection to protect yourself from HPV, which is actually a series of inoculations. Wanting to be protected does not mean you want to be promiscuous, you can be a virgin on your wedding night and still end up with HPV if your husband ever had unprotected sex before being with you.

I explained to my daughters that one of the necessities of being sexually active was to see a GYN doctor preferably before they had sex the first time, so they could start using birth control. Being mature enough to have sex means you are mature enough to protect yourself, from STDs or an unwanted pregnancy.

Any woman who is sexually active should be seen by a Gynecologist once a year. For the last 50 years or so it was recommended a PAP test be done every year as a way for you and your doctor to watch for early changes that indicate Cervical cancer. Insurance companies are currently calling for the test to be done every 2 years, while most GYN doctors are still recommending every year.

That issue should be discussed with your doctor at your next annual exam. Women who are not sexually active should see their doctor starting between age 18 and 21. At that time discuss when you should be seen again.

If a young woman who is having issues with her period, whether she is sexually active or not is not too young to be seen.

Just tell your mom that your period is a little irregular, and you think you should start a low does of birth control. If you don't feel comfortable telling her yourself talk to your regular doctor and they will tell her for you.
