A feature named Auto-MDIX (Medium Dependant Interface Crossover) allows a network device such as a router or PC, to auto sense what type of cable is connected to the device and what type of cable should be used. If it detects the wrong cable, the device will simply reconfigure itself automatically so that it is compatible with the connected cable. This feature is found on the majority of new network devices, meaning the requirement for a specific cable is less important.
In the way of auto-sensing the speed of the network, yes. For example, one NIC could (and is) be made to be able to detect the speed of the ethernet network to which it is connected. Auto-sensing NICs can/will automatically talk at the speed of the network, 10 Mb, 100Mb, or 1000 Mb. If you are referring to Ethernet vs. Tokenring vs. WiFi vs. BNC, that is another story. Theoretically, such a NIC could possibly be designed. However, the media (network cables or the lack thereof) differ too greatly to make the design of such a NIC practical.
As soon as you are on the profile that you activated Auto sign in, it will log in to the PlayStation Network automatically for you
Traditionally, two switches can be connected together with a crossover cable. A crossover cable should be used whenever two of the same network devices need to be connected together. e.g. Connecting a router to another router, a switch to another switch or a PC to another PC. Using a crossover cable is not always necessary however. Most new network devices include a feature named Auto-MDIX (Medium Dependant Interface Crossover). Auto-MDIX detects what type of cable is connected and automatically changes its own configuration to enable data transmission to the other device. i.e. It does not matter if you use a straight through cable or crossover cable on Auto-MDIX enabled devices. Both will work.
