You can start by literally getting down on your hands and knees and crawling throughout the room, looking at items from a small child's eye level.

Look for and repair, replace, remove or move:

• Anything small, loose or detachable, things that could choke a child if swallowed (refrigerator magnets, loose cabinet knobs, small pieces of trash on the floor, etc.)
• Anything poisonous or inedible: roach traps, mouse traps, mouse droppings, household cleaners, mopheads, etc.
• Anything broken or splintered
• Medicines

More tips:

• Install childproof cabinet locks
• Move everything up and away
• Make sure there are no hanging cords
• If your oven has its control knobs on the front, consider replacing it with one with knobs on top
• Check for peeling paint and have your home tested for lead
• Check for and fill any mouse holes
