You have to start out taking a basic EMT course. They are offered at most community colleges. Once you are an EMT you can then go to EMT Intermediate or EMT Paramedic school. If you are working as an EMT and have experience you could easily skip the intermediate class. If you have not had experience it would be easier in the long run if you went through the intermediate class first. Most colleges require that you are either actively working or volunteering as an EMT for a period of 6 months to 1 year before you can attend the paramedic courses.

First a paramedic is not an ambulance driver. There isn't a paramedic in the world that doesn't find that offensive.

In order to become a paramedic you first need to become a basic EMT. You can take the EMT courses at most community colleges. After you have become an EMT many companies will hire you. The basic EMT's can still take care of basic life support patients or they can be placed with a paramedic and they would assist the paramedic and if the patient requires advanced life support they would drive to the hospital. After you have been a basic EMT then you can take the paramedic course.

What skills and training do you need in order to get a paramedic job?

The term 'ambulance driver' is no longer in use and is obsolete. In the past, an ambulance driver was the equivalent of a basic Emergency Medical Technician, with a few being qualified at Emergency First Responder, the qualification below EMT. In many countries, the driver of the ambulance is often qualified at Paramedic or higher, though by convention, the least qualified personnel is usually the driver of the ambulance in a crew shift.
