you become a traver agent by investing in money buying a shop, turn it in to a travel agents and the hire people to work for you.

you then have your own business and can still go traviling around the world to check out the places before you suggest them to your customers.

The above is an in an 'Ideal World'!!! It is not as simple as this and many travel agents get ragged that people just come along and start up without wanting to fully learn how to protect and sell our business products to the public.

It take time, effort, determination and a good product to become a good agent. Attitude, personality, flexibility and dedication go hand in hand. DONT join this market if you cant handle people or dont have time to devote a lot of hours. Passion is key!

If you wish to get a job with an existing agency, it is helpful to get at least a certificate from an accredited school. If however, you wish to open your own agency you will not need to have a special license, but you will need an EIN number if you have more than one employee. In addition, you will need a sales tax license.

Travel show hosts have great jobs. They get to travel around the world and report from exotic locations. Try submitting your resume to the Travel Channel, or visit their website to see what available opportunities they have. You will likely have to start at a lower position and work your way up.

If you are new to the travel industry, your best bet would be to join an established agency as an independent agent. If you plan on specializing in Disney vacations, I would recommend joining an agency that has been "EarMarked" by Disney as an Authorized Disney Vacation Planner. I would look for one that has been established for a while and been a part of the EarMarked program for a while. That tells you they are well connected with Disney and that their sales are increasing consistently year after year. More than likely that means they are providing their agents with training, resources and tools necessary to market their services as a Disney travel agent. I would ask questions like:

  • what type of training do they offer? (is it just the College of Disney Knowledge or do they have their own in-house training? Is it product training? travel sales training? marketing training? all of the above?)
  • what type of agent support do they offer? (is the agency owner or manager available to you full time or does he or she have a "full time job" elsewhere and work their agency around the job? do they offer help with marketing? will they provide back up for you if you are sick or on vacation?)
  • how long have they been in business? how long have they been EarMarked by Disney?
  • how much experience does the owner have in the travel industry? is that experience all as a travel agent or are they including time spent working the front desk of a hotel or a call center?
  • do they have any training fees, maintenance fees etc? Are they one time or yearly fees?
  • do they have a required sales minimum? Is it monthly? quarterly? yearly?
  • what happens if you don't meet the sales minimum? are there additional fees? can you continue with the agency?
  • what do they do to help you meet the sales minimums? do they share leads? help with marketing?
  • what commission split do they offer? Some offer as little as 50% and some as much as 85%.
  • Are there opportunities for increases in commission?
  • how often are commissions paid?
  • do they have any supplier debt?
  • are clients considered "property" of the agency or of the agent? does that mean that if you were to move to a different agency that just your client list remains with you or does it mean that your clients can move with you too? (most of the time it means your client list, not any existing bookings)
  • on average, how much do their agents make in the first year? and in the third year?

Being a Disney travel agent can be very rewarding, but it's a lot more work than most people think! It takes a lot more effort to build a big client database than most new agents expect. Most think that word of mouth from friends and family will keep them busy but most of the time it takes more than that. Find an agency that will hold your hand and help you establish yourself as and agent, market to get your name out there and build a client base that provides you with a steady stream of bookings.
