How do you best present yourself during an interview for a financial advisor position? In: Job Interviews |
Answer
You may think it is really important to emphasize your knowlege in finance but as an advisor myself I can tell you it is not. The most important thing you can emphasize in an interview for a financial advisor position is your communication and sales skills. There is a very high turnover ratio among FAs. This is due to the asset gathering and revenue generating quotas established by the firms. You must have a business plan, an idea of how you are going to be able to meet these quotas. The ability to communicate with people is also key. Express your willingness to cold call, conduct seminars, etc. Whatever it takes to get in front of people. Talk about contacts you may have, and highlight community activities. Most firms will train you in the financially related areas. Highlight any certifications you may already have, insurance liscensing, series 7, 66, 31 etc. If you don't have any of these they will most likely help you get these if they beleve you have the people skills, motivations and community contacts neccessary to make it in the business. Let them know you are tenacious and can handle rejection. Many advisors really struggle with this. For every yes you probably get 9 no's, especially with the cold calling and other situations in which you find yourself talking or meeting with complete strangers. Be confident! Layout your plan! Explain how your skills will help you achieve success!
Hope this helps and Good Luck!
