It is always best to do so face to face. Be honest, straight forward, and polite. Simply tell them the truth - whether it be I'm sorry but were just not compatible as boyfriend/girlfriend - for example.

How would you like it if someone just broke up with you in a letter without any forward warning and you never saw them again?!?!? Don't be mean say it to his face.... is it really that hard?!?!?
