PO2 can be calculated in humans 1 of 2 ways, directly or indirectly. Indirectly is the most frequently used method and easily calculation is obtained using a device called a Pulse Oximeter. You may have seen these devices and not realize, they are rectangular in shape and clamp to the end of a patients fingertip much the same way as a clothes pin to sheets (without as much pressure). It determines the PO2 level using a combination of Red and Infrared LED and is much less evasive than the direct method which measures via a blood sample. The actual PO2 percentage is based on percentage of arterial hemoglobin in the oxyhemoglobin.
