Measure the length and the width in meters.

The length multiplied by the width gives the area in square meters.

That only works for rectangular shapes and there is nothing in the question that makes such an assumption valid.! There are different formulae for some other shapes. For some shapes there are no formulae and different methods need to be employed.

Well, a meter squared is a measurement of area (much like a square foot).

To calculate them, you must get two measurements: the width and length of the area in question, then multiply them together. For example, if you have a garden patch 10 meters wide and 6 meters long, you would multiply 10 by 6 to get 60.
