Add half a teaspoon of Baking powder per four ounces of plain flour and mix well.

To use plain flour instead of self-rising flour, the standard ratio is to sift together the following:

1 cup flour

Can regular flour be turned into self-rising flour?

When using plain (regular) flour and the recipe calls for self-raising flour you must add a good teaspoon of baking powder to the flour. That will turn plain flour into self-raising flour.

Can you substitute plain flour for self raising?

You can but you need to add baking powder and salt to it.

Can you use self raising flour instead of plain flour for anzac biscuits?

not really because they'd turn out like muffins

How much baking soda to flour?

There is not a standard amount - it varies according to what you are cooking. If you wish to turn plain flour into self-raising, you need baking powder (which is a 1:3 ratio of bicarbonate of soda to cream of tartar). You need one teaspoon of baking powder to a cup of plain flour to create self-raising flour.

Can you use regular flour instead of self- rising flour?

Only use self-rising flour (aka self-raising) as a substitute for regular flour if the recipe gives instructions for doing so. Self-rising flour contains salt and leavening and cannot be used as a direct replacement in all recipes that call for plain flour.Well once I made biscuits with regular flour and they were rock hard, so unless you want rocks instead of fluffy soft biscuits, then you can't use rugular flour instead of self-rising.

Can you use strong white bread flour for making pancakes?

yes you can----but the cake will be heaver--sifting alot might help.

Can you use self rising flour instead of bread flour for bread?

If a recipe calls for self-rising flour, your recipe will not turn out if you replace it with unbleached flour only because unbleached flour does not rise. You would also need to add baking powder to the recipe (about three teaspoons per cup of flour) if you were making this substitution in order for your recipe to rise.

Can you use self rising flour to bake a cream cheese pound cake?

It will probably still turn out ok if you do substitute self raising for all purpose. If the recipe calls for other raising agents (baking powder or bicarbonate of soda etc...) you may want to cut down the quantity of those slightly, since they are already included in the flour.

What would happen if i used plain flour instead of self raising flour in cakes?

The cake will turn out less risen than intended. If there are no other raising agents in the recipe (e.g baking powder, bicarbonate of soda, or eggs) the cake will not really resemble a cake so much as a brick.

Is cake flour the same as self rising flour?

Short answer: NO. they are not the same. Do NOT use one for the other. I was trying out a new peach cobbler recipe. It called for self-rising flour. I found the definition for self-rising flour which is basically flour with some type of rising agent (usually baking powder) in it. That is what I thought cake flour was -- flour with baking powder. When i made the recipe using the cake flour, the cobbler did not turn out/did not rise. Therefore, I would not use cake flour in place of self=rising flour again. Use 1 cup regular flour minus 2 teaspoons. Add 1 and 1/2 teaspoon baking powder and 1/2 teaspoon salt to equal 1 cup.

Can you substitute bread flour with self raising flour?

Yes, in many recipes. But you would need to reduce or eliminate any baking powder or baking soda or salt called for in your recipe. In pastries, gravies and other foods that do not call for any baking soda or baking powder, self-rising flour would not be good to use and could spoil the food's taste or texture.

Can i make pie crust from cake flour?

If you do, it will not turn out right as different flours result in different dough consistencies. Cake flour is meant to turn out fluffy and crumbly, like a cake. For pizza dough, you want to use all-purpose or bread flour.
