Here's what the Owners Manual has to say about the high-mount brake light replacement:

  1. Pry the light assembly away from its housing and push rearward to disengage it from the retaining clips.
  2. Lift the front of the light assembly from the parcel shelf
  3. Disconnect the light assembly wiring and replace the light assembly.


Replacing high-mount brakelamp bulbs - Decklid spoiler

Your vehicle may be equipped with a decklid spoiler that has a high mount stop lamp module containing integral multiple light emitting diodes (LED). If one or more LEDs burn out, the complete lamp module has to be replaced. See your dealer for the replacement LED module.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Open the liftgate.
  3. Remove the liftgate upper finish panel.
  4. Remove the rubber plug from the liftgate.
  5. Remove the four nuts from the high mount brake light mounting studs.
  6. Close the liftgate and pull the brake light away from the liftgate.
  7. Rotate the high mount brake light bulb socket(s) and rotate them a 1/2 turn counterclockwise and remove the socket(s) from the lamp assembly.
  8. Remove the bulb(s) from the socket by pulling the bulb straight out.
  9. The installation is the reverse of the removal.

Taurus Sedan

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Open the trunk and remove the rear luggage compartment door trim panel.
  3. From inside the trunk, rotate the high mount brake light bulb socket(s) and rotate them a 1/2 turn counterclockwise and remove the socket(s) from the lamp assembly.
  4. Remove the bulb(s) from the socket by pulling the bulb straight out.
  5. The installation is the reverse of the removal.

On mine, (a '98) you can lay on your back,looking up, in the trunk and reach up and twist loose the bulb connectors only)

there are two 10mm bolts on the inside, then push out on the nuts that are loose on the bolts, sometimes it sticks, and the assembly comes out.

Open the trunk, look up in the compartment, there should be 2 plugs with wires coming out of them, they twist towards the aft end of the vehicle. Twist them towards you and gently pull them out. The bulbs will be here, then change with an equivalent bulb. take off the plastic trim on tail gate to gain access to bulb
