I have an 85 700 maxim so I should think they are about the same. It's not hard as long as your exhaust is not in the way, I can't remember I change the standard exhaust a long time ago. The drain bung should be between the second and third down pipe on the underside of the engine, loosen anticlock and drain oil into something with at least 1-gallon capacity. The filter (on mine anyway) sticks out from the front of the engine at the bottom again between the two middle down pipes, as far as I remember a 10mm(3/8) socket or spanner will take the casing of to allow you to change it, well worth doing at the same time as the oil (no point putting fresh oil through a dirty filter). So when you're new filter is on and your drain bung back in put the bike on the centerstand on level ground and fill to the mark with fresh oil. Then start the bike and allow it to idle for a few minutes. Stop bike. Check oil level after 10 mins or so and top up to the level again as your filter should now be filled also and will leave a little less in the sump. If its no different don't worry just check it again after you have been for a ride just remember to give the oil time to settle back into the sump. The best time to check oil is before you start the bike from cold
I measured my 83 midnight maxim 750 and it stands 31 in. from ground to top of seat
I have a marago 750 lol. I didn't know it but my maxim 82 750 had the shocks, calipers, rear tire and possibly tree of a virago. I discovered it when getting break pads.
on craigs list yesterday sept 6 in medford Oregon there is a complete wireing harness for your bike
yes! I still own a 1982 model year, and it still performs well. This is a bike that was well ahead of the game in its design at the time.
tire psi
82.00 HP (59.9 kW)) @ 9000 RPM
10-40 synthetic Suzuki oil
If it's the 750 (and assuming its the same as the '83), it's 81 HP with 67 nm of torque. They're pretty snappy little bikes
1990 Yamaha Virago 750 is 55 hp.
The Filter is inside the round cap at the lower front of the motor. The drain plug is right below that. I usually remove the filter first and the remove the drain plug
I just posted this question in "Yamaha Motorcycle Forum" for my '82 Maxim and was told 3.7 quarts (not sure if this is with the filter or not). I heard the capacity is stamped below the filler cap. ..... The oil amount is stamped below the oil cap... in milliliters. On my 750 maxim, this is 2500milliliters, or 2.5 liters. Motorcycle oil generally come in liter bottles (which is close to a quart anyway) so it takes around two and a half liter bottles to fill. This is including the oil filter. You can always check the oil level by putting the bike on it's showstand (not the kickstand) and looking through the oil glass located next to the brake pedal.
I THINK that you will be able to fit an exhaust from the Yamaha XJ650/750 air-cooled Maxims. They share the same frame, the difference being that the Maxim-X is liquid cooled. Getting the exhausts to clear the radiator shouldn't be a problem as the radiator sits above the exhausts (I have the 750 and it shares the same frame, there are mounts on the frame for the radiator). A good place to find out for definite would be www.xjbikes.com. I'm sure someone will have tried the swap on there.
