How do you change the starter on a 1996 Saturn?

[Edit]

Answer

Disconnect the battery from the car.

Raise the car and support as you will be working underneath the entire time.

The starter is on the back side of the engine bolted into the transmission with two bolts.

The bolts are the same size, the front bolt is easy, the back bolt is easy to remove with a 3/8" drive wratchet with a 4-6" extension. Putting it back in is a trick.

Unbolt the starter and pull out of the transmission. Undo both bolts holding the wiring on than remount the wiring to the new starter.

Put it back in place and put in the bottom bolt first, bring it up close to snug but allow yourself some play to move the starter for the top bolt.

Take your wratchet and extension and put a good glob of grease into the socket than insert the head of the top bolt. The grease will allow you to keep the bolt in but still allow you to pull the socket off when completed.

Slide it behind and feel for the hole, than move the starter slightly until you catch a thread.

Tighten it all up than reconnect your battery and your good to go.
