2 answer. lcd has much less power consumption then plasma.even if plasma has better picture it will loose brightness faster then lcd. some plasma models are more susceptible to " burn in " still images. i like lcd better.p.s I'm an electronic tech.

3 answer.

As of January, 2009, the "Better Purchase" value wise depends on size. A 42", 50", or 55" Plasma will still cost less than the same sized LCD of comparable picture quality. Plasmas under 42" are rare, and over 50" are still expensive based on the units produced.

As far as power consumption, there's actually not a huge difference when comparing apples to apples. A bright, good quality 42" LCD will use roughly the same power as a 42" plasma, but the plasma will fluctuate power levels based on the picture content. If it's a black image, it will use less power than an LCD, if it's a white image, it will use more.

"Burn-In" is somewhat of an issue for Plasma TVs, typically though, burn-in is only an issue if you plan to leave the same image on the screen for extended periods of time such as using it for a computer monitor, or an information display. TV station logos, and most new game systems have been designed to be not harmful. In addition, most new Plasmas have a featre that discreetly shifts the image to prevent burn-in.

Most new plasmas are built to perform for many years. For exaple, a Plasma rated for 60,000 hours means that after 27 years of watching TV 6 hours a day, the TV will be about half as bright as when it was new. (not dead, just half as bright) It's the same basic technology used in "Tube" televisions - Phosphors are "painted" on the surface of the glass, and ignited using electricity. Only in a much more precise, and compact manner.

The "Better Purchase" question would have to be answered by aswering key questions such as:

  • What will you be watching? (Sports & action movies tend to look better on Plasma, while text & data are near perfect on an LCD)
  • Sunlight? (LCDs typically deal with glare better, while plasmas perform better in direct sunlight)
  • Heat? (plamas use a glass screen that won't discolor or warp over a fireplace)
  • Weight (LCDs are typically lighter)

There are many widely debated pros & cons for both Plasma & LCD. And many different reasons for purchasing one over the other. The best advice for someone looking to purchase a lage "Flat Panel" is to speak to a qualified, preferably trained professional, ideally at a custom Home Theater store (I have found that most big box store salespeople are barely more informed than the average consumer, and tend to offer opinion, or rumor as factual information - I was once told that I needed to purchase the Extended warranty because it covered "Recharging the Plasma" which needed to be done every six months).
