When a penny is new, it's bright and shiny, but like most other metals, after oxidization (exposure to oxygen) or in the presence of moisture or salts, it can be covered by a dull oxide coat....

Long story short, seeing as coke is very acidic, the acid will dissolve the dirt.

yes coke can clean a penny because coke has phosphoric acid that takes the crap off of the pennies

  Don't expect to see fireworks. The penny will not explode. In fact it WILL clean the penny a little.
