I have successfully used the Pertronix unit to replace points in a few cars, costs about $65. takes about 1/2 hour.

You could also build a transistorized ignition system from a kit by Velleman (BGmicro.com) You keep the points but they last for a very long time as most of the switching current goes through a transistor.
