an IU is not a standardized unit that can be converted to mg with a single formula. IUs means something different for each item (usually vitamins) it is used for. So for one vitamin you could have 1000IUs and it is 10mg, whereas 10mg of another vitamin is only 100IU.

Converting IU to mg is very difficult. Mass equivalents are different for every vitamin, and this must be determined first. For example, vitamin A has the IU biological equivalent of 0.3 mcg retinol, or of 0.6 mcg beta-carotene.

The current RDA for Vitamin A is approximately 900 mcg, which is 3000 IU.

To convert, multiply the IU figure by 9/30 (or to get a very rough estimate, by 0.3).

How do you convert 2000 IU of vitamin D3 to mg?

Keep in mind that conversions from IU to mg are specific for each vitamin, so this formula/answer is only applicable for Vitamin D. You first have to convert the 2,000 IU into mcg. Each IU of Vitamin D is equal to 40 mcg, so you divide 2,000 by 40 which equals 50. Then you have to convert the mcg amount into mg which you do by dividing the mcg amount by 100. In this case 50 divided by 100, which equals 0.5, which means that 2,000 IU of Vitamin D is 0.5 mg
