What is actually means is that only one of the dimensions is a yard. The other dimension varies. They are right that you can't convert between them. You have to know what the other dimension is. However, they are not right in thinking that they are two different things.

That is true but if you know how many yards of fabric you have and the width ( in inches) you can convert to sq yards.
yards X (width in inches)/36 = square yards
