You're trying to get rid of the repeating part by subtracting it.

x = 0.78989

10x = 7.8989

1000x = 789.8989

1000x - 10x = 789.8989 - 7.8989

990x = 782

x = 782/990

Their GCF is 2, so cut them in half.

391/495

Let x = 0.789898989...

Then 100x = 78.989898...

Subtracting the first from the second, 99x = 78.9898... - 0.7898... = 78.2

That is x = 78.2/99 = 782/990 which simplifies to 391/495
