To grab an image from a web page you can click on it and then, with the mouse button held down, drag the image out of the browsers window onto the desktop. Alternatively you can right click on the image and select from the menu... Save As...Use Image as Desktop Image...Add image to iPhoto... etc.
Plug in the external hard drive, it should appear as an orange disk icon in the finder (look down the left hand side). Next open the folder with your picture(s). You can now just drag and drop the required files to the external hard drive. If the pictures are in iPhoto you can drag and drop straight from there too.
