How do you count the valence electron of an atom?

Answer:
2 electrons on first ring
8 on second and third

so you take the atomic number, then take away 2, then take away 8, theres your answer.. valence electrons are the number of electrons on the outer shell

so if atomic number = 13
13-2=11
11-8=3
3 is your valence number
