you cannot create gold in alchemy it is just a myth.

Answer:

Alchemy was the forerunner of the modern science of chemistry. The Alchemists put most of their attention into figuring out two tasks - living forever and turning common metals into gold.

Both these tasks could be accomplished by (in their opinion) finding the Philosopher's Stone. Failing that they tried all manner of chants and spells featuring rare cstly and disgusting animal parts and poisons.

How does Edward perform alchemy without an array or a transmutation circle?

The reason Edward Elric and Alphonse Elric can perform alchemy without an array or transmutation circle is because they have already broken the number one rule of alchemy-never perform HUMAN alchemy,or never try and create a human or bring a human back to life. And because they have broken this rule they have already seen the one-way road to heaven at the cost of loosing their limbs, and they can simply slap their hands together and touch the object they are willing to change, such as a flower for a ribbon,a pin for a needle and so on.Another major rule in alchemy is never try and turn objects into gold.Sometimes Edward can get a LITTLE greedy and his artificial limbs sort of rust up,that is why alchemy cannot be used for greed or self purposes, you must only use alchemy for other people that was a major lesson Edward and Alphonse learned later on in the series.

Can people do alchemy like in Fullmetal Alchemist?

i dont think alchemy is real, the closet they've come to it is transmuting lead to gold, i think. mabey it worked in the past. you can read up on it on wikipedia, just type in "alchemy" or "alchemist" hoped that helped ^^ Unfortunately, alchemy is completely different on this side of the gate. Sorry to disappoint you but from what I've read so far, its just chemically breaking down elements. but then again, i could be wrong. Fullmetal Alchemist actually inspired me to become an alchemist, but i'm sure i'm not the only one. :) maybe looking up some books or the internet. but it won't be easy. It's hard to find basically "step one" like in intro as to what it is, how it works, and a test experiment like Ed's bird on the floor or the origami crane. I wish alchemy on this side was exactly the same as Amestris, or that there was at least some way we could cross over. I still haven't found what I'm looking for, most of these books are about the Philosopher's Stone. And once again, making one isn't the same as Amestrian alchemy. Hope this helped a bit. :) ~Powerwisdomcourage1

What role did alchemy play in the Gold Rush?

Alchemy played virtually no role in the Gold Rushes which took place in the American continent. The majority of the Gold Rush took place after alchemy had been widely discredited, in favor of the more modern chemistry. In any case, the purpose of the Gold Rush was to find gold; whereas the goal of many alchemists was to create it, rather than dig it up.
