Pot or root bound plants need to be re-potted into a larger pot. Do not go up more than two sizes in your pot.

Place a piece of coffee filter paper over the bottom of the new pot, (works better then pebbles or other things common used for drainage) add potting mixture to a point where the current root ball will sit on it and be level with the upper edge of the pot. Remove the plant from its old container, loosen the roots from their circular habit, and place the plant into the new pot. Add potting mixture around the root ball and tamp firmly in. Water the plant well and place in an appropriate location.

How can you tell when your plants have outgrown their pot?

If you're wondering about it, most likely they already have. Depending of how fast they grow and the size of the pot, most plants become root-bound within a few months. If they have been growing pretty fast and then slow down, that is usually a good indication of being root-bound. If your pot is plastic, squeeze the sides of it to loosen its grip on the soil. Try to pull the plant out. If if comes freely with everything inside the pot and you see a shell of roots, then it is root bound. Find a bigger pot to put it in. If not and it doesn't come freely or if the roots try to tear off inside the soil, it is best to leave it alone. Hope that helps.
