How do you deal with a child who lies?

[Edit]

My advice would be that you take the following steps:

  1. You tell the child that lying is not a good thing to do, if you have a religious background you say God doesn't want us to lie, that lying can cause trouble, that it's not acceptable or allowed.
  2. You set rules for punishment, how many lies a day before it's time for punishment. Could be only once or a few according to importance of his lies.
  3. You set a penalty for lying, grounding the child, assigning chores, etc.
  4. You set stricter penalties as necessary. Increase the punishment time or chores or you deny privileges; candy, soft drinks, ice cream, pizza, toys, gifts.

Still no success? You send the child to boot camp!!
