Right click an empty space on the taskbar. Now click, Properties, Taskbar, Customize, and look under Current Items, click under Behavior an item you wish to hide. You will then have the option to change how this icon appears by clicking the V and looking at the options.

Actually, the above method only allows you to HIDE the icons. They are still there though, and still make booting up slower. To actually REMOVE them from the tray, you have to go to the Start Menu/Run... then type "msconfig". Then just uncheck the items you want to remove from the Taskbar.

If you want to remove a single program from the taskbar you simply right click on the unwanted program and click on delete.

Note this will not remove the program from the computer just the taskbar shortcut.

The icons on the right, next to the clock are known as the 'system tray' icons. These icons are actually programs that are currently running and therefore in most cases you will not want to remove them however you may want to 'hide' them. Do this by RIGHT clicking on the system tray and choosing PROPERTIES and then CUSTOMIZE button. You can choose "always show" (I recommend this for antivirus and volume control for sure) "hide when inactive" this is what they will most be set as at first, you should change these to "always hide" when you know you don't need to see any changes for monitoring.

If you have Windows XP:

  1. Go to the "Start" menu on your computer
  2. Select "Control Panel"
  3. Click on the "Add or Remove Programs" icon
  4. Find "icon name" in the list of programs, select it and click on the "Remove" button to its right.
  5. Follow on-screen prompts to remove the application

If you have Windows Vista/Windows 7:

  1. Go the "Start" menu on your computer
  2. Select "Control Panel"
  3. Click on "Programs"
  4. Then choose "Programs and Features"
  5. Find "icon name" in the program list and click "Uninstall"
  6. Follow on-screen prompts to remove the application

Right click an empty portion of the taskbar, select properties, taskbar, customise, left click whichever icon you wish to remove and then set it to hide always. You cannot delete them, but can hide them permanetly.

The area of the Task Bar, next to the clock, that contains icons is called the System Tray. If you right-click on an empty portion of the System tray, a manu will pop up. Click "Properties" in the menu and a control panel type of window will open. You can check the option to hide inactive icons here, or click on the "Customize" button and set the desired option for each individual icon that may appear in the System Tray.

Open each of the programs and you will find a tick-box somewhere that allows you to turn the taskbar icon on or off. When loading new software, it will ask you at a point in the installation if you would like to have a taskbar icon: Click No (Thanks

It very much depends on the nature of the program associated with the icon.

If the program that is represented by the icon in the System Tray is a regular, non-malicious program that you have previously installed intentionally, it should be possible to remove the program using the 'Add or Remove Programs' applet in the Control Panel. (Windows XP)

If you suspect the program is malware, your best option is to install a decent anti-malware application and use that to scan and clean your system.

Just select it with your mouse and either click Delete on your keyboard (usually located above the up-down-left-rightarrows) or right click and find Delete and select it. If it's an icon for a program, you might get a message saying something like "deleting will only delete the icon, not the program, if you want to delete the program then blah, blah, blah...." So then click OK and you're done.
