No short answer to that one!
The best reference I can give is to have a look at the work of Christopher Alexander, an Architect from USA who developed some sweet patterns of design in the 70's and furthered his work since then. His books are the most delightful to read, written so that everyone can understand, not just architects, and are so rich in information presented logically and systematically, that one feels empowered to design one's own home (and community) just like that! People in Australia have followed these principles and have designed homes that satisfy our intrinsic needs as humans for community, warmth, safety, shelter, nourishment and creativity.
