Measure the diameter, that is the distance from one side directly to the other side as you cross the center. Take that distance and divide it by two to get the radius. Then measure the height of the pool, i.e. how far it measures from top to bottom along the side. Apply the formula pie x radius squared x height. I.e. take the radius measurement and multiply it by itself (square it) and then multiply that number by 3.14 (pie) and then multiply that number by the height. Your final number will be the volume in whatever units you measured the height and radius, i.e. inches cubed or cubic inches if your radius and height were in inches. OR, if you don't want to do THAT, you will need two things. 1. $5 an hour 2. A mathematician Here's a somewhat simpler formula which uses the dimensions in feet and gives the answer in gallons: diameter X diameter X depth X 5.9 = volume in gallons This and formulas for other shapes can be found here: http://www.kingtechnology.com/infostation/info512.htm

You can only estimate it. You will have to select a known geometric shape that most closely approximates your pool. If your pool is very irregular and can't be approximated by just one shape, then you may have to select several different known shapes to approximate different parts of the pool. Chances are good that you can approximate the area of your pool by adding the areas of several rectangles.

A swimming pool will vary in size depending on its purpose.

* A lap pool for exercise will need to be wide enough to clear a full armspan (bigger than 2m/6')and long in the other dimension. 15m+ (49'),

* or a swim jet allows a smaller exercise pool by creating a current for the swimmer to swim against, so could be reduced to 4m (13'),

* A play pool for children should be wider and longer than 2m (6') so a child jumping in does not hit the other side and injure themselves. * a soaking pool such as a spa or hot tub will need to be sized for the number of users, taking into account whether the seating is more upright or reclined.

There will need to be access on at least two sides of the pool for ease of use and maintenance. This should be at least 1.2m (4') wide and preferably greater. Pool covers may require room next to the pool. Pool equipment needs storage space, and treatment chemicals, pumps and filters also need space.

Check pool Fencing regulations in your area and allow space for this. Also allow space for any poolside activities: lounging, changing etc. and check whether these are permitted within any fencing.

Some local authorities may have regulations requiring a setback from neighbouring properties.
