In most motion sensor switches you will have three wires. A black, white and red wire. The black and white (neutral) are used for the electronics in the sensor. These connect to the incoming black and white power. Connect the lamp across the red and the white (neutral). When the sensor detects motion the red wire becomes "hot" and the light will go on.

∙ 13y agoIt can, if the motion sensor has a daytime shut off photo cell installed in it. When a light is turned on and the motion sensor see the light it thinks it is daylight and shuts the motion detector off.

Why to put motion sensors in schools?
Usually motion sensors are installed in schools and offices in order to automatically turn on and off the lights. If nobody is in the room (no motion), the light will automatically turn off to save electricity.
I want to install a motion detector security light outside can I simply run wiring from where I want the light and join it to the wiring that feeds my backyard porchlight or into an existing outlet?
You could, but you need to have power to the security light all the time, so you would need to make sure that when you turned off the porch light you didn't turn off the power to the security light or obviously it will never some on. I had a pair of ordinary carriage lights outside my garage doors, so I just took the carriage lights down and hooked up the security light and it it fitted directly into the wiring box. I put a plate over the other carriage light box to keep the rain out. Phil
