93 Grand Cherokee Alarm Disable instructI looked on line and found a wealth of information and still had erratic security alerts on my 93 Grand Cherokee Laredo alarm system. I found that the switches on the door locks corrode inside and may be some of the cause for door lock alarm reset failures and alarms resetting or going off when the door is closed. I tried it all; unplugging the negative terminal usually resets the system so you can use the key on the passenger or rear door locks to turn the alarm off, but in my case that didn't always work. I also found that the alarm power lock out to the starter can also cause the solenoid on the starter to hang up and give the appearance of another alarm issue. (have some one hold the ignition to start and bang solenoid with a large pipe or hammer to release the solenoid)if you think you have reset the alarm and it still won't start. I did not have the keyless entry unit and the over head console was missing so this may have made my situation somewhat unique though I doubt it, as most problems I have read about I have had. Now that the preliminaries are over I'll tell you all how I completely eliminated the VTSS and all my erratic alarm problems.

Sept. 24, 2007------I encountered a problem with this Alarm Removal technique and am in the process of getting more information on complete removal of the VTSS. I encountered a no spark and no start issue a number of days later after disarming my VTSS and I believe another part of the system or the PCM is responding to the missing VTSS and preventing power to the distributor.

I jumped power from the battery to the coil wire and was able to get it running but didn't leave it running long enough for the computer to disable the alarm ( a least this is what I surmise from other mechanics familiar with this system) So I suggest you wait for my follow up in the next few days prior to doing this or at least be aware you could have the same issue or perhaps not. **************************************

*****My quick and easy disable your alarm system guide*****

(don't LOL as it only took about 7 -10 minutes to do this)

The right glove console needs to come off but first the dash has to be removed first. Don't worry it is light and is held by only 5 screws and a few snap in devices and plastic fasteners (use the flat head or narrow spatula for that... more later.)

Once you have your car started and no security flashing dash lights do the following (this should work even if you didn't get the alarm reset ): turn off the car and using,

one flat screw driver or narrow stiff scraper and one Phillips screw driver,

Center display/Air/Stereo console trim (mine was bit bit cracked so get it as loose as possible: Unscrew the two screws under the dash for the plastic trim around the stero and air control knobs and car diagnostics monitor. no need to take this off just pull it back half way off if possible)

Then the right console is next so: unscrew the bottom 4 screws to the entire right side console that houses the glove box. These are located below and under the plastic console at knee level.

DASH: Now the large center vent on top of the dash comes off the same way (watch for the blue sensor in the center as it needs to be twisted off and disconnected counter clockwise) I only say watch out as you may want to keep it intact for the future. Now that all three vent grills are off the screws to the dash will be inside these grill openings. Remove all five screws two left and right and one center. Then using your ands and the flat head or scraper pry under the dash at the left or right corner, there are two long snap fasteners there and also some smaller ones at the leading edge of the dash. Just pry up and wiggle upwards the dash cover and it will disengage a section at a time them pull it up and out and set it in the back seat. Now the top screws to the right hand glove console assembly (this is the entire plastic right console that includes the glove box) are visible, remove the screws. Now this is a little tricky; there is one screw holding the console in place on the left side of the console next to the right side of the computer display trim, if most of the visible center console trim screws are out then the trim should pull back enough to force a screw driver between the console and the trim to take this last screw out. Now wiggle and pull the console out (it will hang up on the right side a bit) now the VTSS (Vehicle theft Security System modules are visible once the console is off. the Alarm module is on the far left and another switch is in the middle, we wont touch the far right hand fuse module. Unscrew the two screws on each of the two modules on the left. Then pull the plug off the right one (there is a small flat red tab in the center push this outwards and the plug will come out, then pull the left module out and two tabs on either side of the plug need to be pryed outwards and pull the plug out of the Module . Go ahead and check and the car should start and all locks and horn lights etc work OK. That's it the alarm is GONE for GOOD. Put some tape over the plug ends and push them in the dash and screw the alarm madules back in or toss them your choice. Work in reverse to reinstall the console and then the dash and vent screens. That's it your rid of the arm system. According to a Alarm Tech unplugging as we have done disables the alarm permanently. For how to reset the alarm Google Grand Cherokee alarm problems. I struggled with resetting the alarm over and over and had so many variations on alarm security modes it got confusing which technique to use and when.

Typical reset is as follwows:

Unplug the negative terminal on the battery for a minute, then reattach it.

then use the passenger or rear door and turn key left then right until the lights stop flashing then open the passenger door and try starting it if no starter or it goes into security mode try removing fuse 6 & 8 in the side panel near the glove box. If that doesn't always work then your door or key switches are corroded and will always cause problems and remove the alarm for a final fix. Good Luck, Robert

The alarm on my 96 RHD UK spec Grand Cherokee started going off for no reason, even when I was driving along and refused to be reset. I even disconnected the battery but the alarm was still sounding! The imobiliser worked normally. The alarm unit is located behind the light switch panel on the far RHS of the dash. The receiver for the key fob is in the overhead panel and is connected to the alarm unit by 2 data cables. Disconnecting the alarm unit will imobilise the vehicle. The sounder/siren is connected to the alarm unit via a 4/5 wire cable which exits through the bulkhead about 2 inches to the RHS of the throttle cable. The sounder is situated on the otherside of the bulk head in between, and behind, the Brake servo and the bracket that carries the ECU. Disconnect the ECU and remove the bracket complete with ECU to get at it. I disconnected the sounder by cutting the 4 wires, individually, and taped up the ends. The sounder was still sounding! Replace the ECU. The car starts and drives OK, only no alarm. The imobiliser still works, the keyfob still being needed to "un-imobilise" and start the engine.

If the alarm is currently sounding, you can shut it off by using the key to lock and unlock the door. To permenently disable it, locate the alarm (I believe it is under the passanger side dashboard) and unplug it. They do have a reputation of going bad and causing a dead battery.
