How do you disconnect the check engine light?

[Edit]

Answer

In order to turn off the "Check Engine Light", you or a trusted mechanic check the Onboard Diagnostics (OBDII) OBDII uses a "code reader" which plugs into your car (usually in the dashboard, or near the radio...) and that tells you what "malfunction" is setting your Check Engine Light off.

Basically, if there is a fault in any computer controlled system (fuel, ignition, SRS (airbag), emissions etc) the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) sends a code to the OBD unit... Then the code reader breaks down the fault, it's location and usually (with a good reference manual) you can remedy the problem (or at least narrow it down!)

Good luck and by the way, you can purchase OBDII Code Scanners starting at $99 or so from a ton of auto parts places, if you're a DIYer...
