You start with a normal one way circuit consisting of a three phase contactor and an three phase overload in series for the forward circuit. Then you add the reverse contactor in parallel with the forward contactor but with line one and line two crossed over i.e. when the reverse contactor is made, line one of the supply will be connected to line two of the motor and line two of the supply to line one of the motor. The control circuit must also be interlocked to prevent forward and reverse being energized at the same time.

The incoming three phase supply connects to the starter terminals L1, L2, and L3. The out going voltage to the motor connects to the starter terminals T1, T2, and T3. If the motor turns the wrong way interchange any two of the T terminal wires at the motor.

Much harder to type than to draw it out.

M1: 3 phase motor

xfmr1: 600/120 or 480/120 150va, ground the neutral

M1F/M1R: Special fwd/rev motor starter or with interlock

PB1/2: N.O. pushbutton

mcr: control relay

t1: timer

I take it that you are familiar with the configuration of a three phase starter contactor. Incoming lines are L1,L1 and L3. An overload block will be connected to the bottom of the contactor. Load lines on the overload block are T1, T2 and T3. Connect two of your supply legs to L1 and L2 on the top of the contactor. From the bottom of overload block terminal T2 supply a jumper to the top of the contactor and connect to terminal T3. Connect the motor to terminals T1 and T3 on the overload block. This configuration will include all of the overload trips into the stop and start circuit. If any of the overload trips open, the motor will become de energized.

The incoming line supply connects to L1, L2 and L3 of the forward contactor. Jumpers from the forward contactor terminals L1, L2, and L3 are taken over to the reverse contactor and are placed on terminals L3, L2, and L1. The top of the contactor terminas are L1 - L3, L2 - L2 and L3 - L1. This is where the reversal of the motor takes place. From the bottom of the forward contactor the load is connected to T1, T2, and T3. Jumpers from the forward contactor T1, T2 and T3 are paralleled to the T1, T2 and T3 of the reversing contactor.

The control voltage circuitry has the forward contactor's coil routed through the reverse contactor's N.C. contacts. Likewise the reverse contactor's coil is routed through the forward contactor's N.C. contacts. What this allows is that only one contactor of the set can be energized at a time.

When the forward contactor is energized the reverse contactor's coil circuit is open. When the reverse contactor is energized the forward contactor's coil circuit is open.

Besides having a electrical interlock the forward - reversing contactor set will also have a mechanical interlock so that it is impossible for the two contactors to be closed at the same time. This holds true even if a person tries to close the contactors by pushing up on the armature by hand.

As always, if you are in doubt about what to do, the best advice anyone should give you is to call a licensed electrician to advise what work is needed.

Before you do any work yourself,

on electrical circuits, equipment or appliances

always use a test meter to ensure the circuit is, in fact, de-energized.

Do you need starter for 0.5HP three phase induction motor?

You never need a starter for a three-phase motor.

How do you change rotation on a Century AC motor?

There are two alternate methods depending on whether the motor is single phase or three phase. On a single phase motor, reverse either the start winding coil lead or the run winding coil lead but not both. This action will reverse the motor's rotation. On a three phase motor, interchanging any two of the three coil leads will reverse the motor's rotation.

Why three phase meter is better than single phase meter?

A three-phase meter can be used for single phase while the reverse is not the case.

Why three phase motor run in reverse even if it is not wired to run in reverse direction?

If a three phase motor in running in reverse, then one of the phases is reversed, plain and simple. If the wiring is correct at the motor, perhaps the phase reversal occurred someplace else.

There is many type of starter on three phase circuit but the most common are 1: D.O.L (Direct on line). 2: Manual Star Delta Starter. 3: Automatic Star Delta Starter.

What is the purpose of dol starter in three phase motor?

Three phase motors are controlled by a device called a starter. The starter allows the motor's supply voltage to be applied to and removed from the motor. These types of starters coil's can be controlled with usually a lower voltage that can be remotely controlled.

Reverse running of three phase meter?

The reverse running of a three phase meter is possible when one of the meter's two potential coils fails. This is a problem found typically on a Delta service. A three phase meter in this condition is damaged and will report lower energy use than actual.
