There is no cure for depression. Nor is there any quick way around it. There are different medications available for depression, depending on the type of disorder you suffer from. Antidepressants can correct the chemical imbalance but only for the time you are taking them. They also take months to kick in and you may need to try many different kinds before finding the right one for you. As we come to understand it more, I think there will be a cure or at least treatments that are more tolerable and more targeted to the actual problem. Right now treating depression is like trying to perform a delicate surgery with a butcher knife. It works, but you get a lot of unpleasant side-effects. I envision that future treatments will become more like scalpels than butcher knives. The bottom line is that if you're having trouble with feeling down and have for more than a couple weeks, you need to see a doctor. It's very important that you do this since there is no immediate cure for depression; you may need to get on an antidepressant medication in order to try and control it. Though medication isn't for everyone, it is sometimes the only option left. From personal experience I can tell you that I avoided taking them for 5 years, throwing out things like "they won't work" and "nothing's going to fix me". But the honest answer is, you don't know until you try. It's not magic, it takes a while and can be a pain in the butt, but I'm feeling better than I have in... I don't even know how many years! I can finally function. If you've tried everything else, it may be time to talk to your doctor.
