There are pages and pages of things that can cause a check engine light. You need to have it checked with a scantool. Then the code can be diagnosed and repaired.
Repairing the fault which is causing the check engine light is the recommended way to go about doing this.

if it's 96 & newer.. you will need an OBD2 scan tool to erase the codes that turn the light on.
As with any check engine light in an OBDII Vehicle (1996 and newer), use an OBDII scanner to FIRST read your codes and find out why it was on in the first place, then SECOND erase the code using the erase command on the scanner. If you don't fix the problem that caused the light to come on in the first place, it will always return.
It comes on when the engine computer detects a malfunction and sets a code.
If you are referring to the Check Engine light it is on because the computer has set a fault code due to a problem with the emissions system.
Did you reset the Check Engine light? If not, reset by disconnecting the negative battery cable for a couple of minutes. This will erase the computer. Reconnect the battery cable and if everything is OK, the Check Engine light should be off.
You can unhook the battery or use a scan tool to erase the code. If the cause is not repaired, the light will return.
